Vaishno Devi Yatra Suspended Amid Heavy Rainfall, IMD Issues Red Alert In J&K

The Vaishno Devi yatra was temporarily suspended on Tuesday due to continuous heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir, as authorities prioritize the safety of pilgrims. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the Union Territory, warning of further heavy rains in several districts.

A landslide was reported in the Ardhkuwari area of Vaishno Devi on Tuesday, raising concerns over the safety of the pilgrimage route. Additionally, traffic on the 250-km Jammu-Srinagar national highway remained disrupted for the third consecutive day due to incessant rains. Several rockfalls were reported at Chanderkote, Kela Morh, and Battery Cheshma in the Ramban district, forcing authorities to halt vehicular movement as a precautionary measure.

Rivers and streams in the region are flowing above or near danger levels, leading to widespread flooding in low-lying areas and submerging several roads across the city.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah held a high-level review meeting in Jammu to assess flood mitigation measures. He directed officials to remain on high alert and take all necessary steps to ensure public safety. Acknowledging the seriousness of the situation in many parts of the Jammu province, CM Abdullah confirmed he would take the next available flight from Srinagar to Jammu to personally monitor developments. He also instructed additional funds to be allocated to Deputy Commissioners for emergency restoration work and other urgent requirements.

Authorities have urged residents to avoid water bodies and areas prone to landslides, especially in districts including Jammu, Reasi, Samba, Kathua, Udhampur, Ramban, Doda, and Kishtwar, until the situation improves.
