Jammu and Kashmir faced severe disruption on Tuesday as heavy rainfall triggered flood-like conditions across several regions. Continuous downpours caused major rivers in the Jammu division to flow above the danger mark, leading to chaos in normal life. Mobile and internet services were abruptly disrupted by service providers, adding to public inconvenience.
Authorities have ordered the closure of all government and private schools in the Jammu division on August 27 (Wednesday) due to the worsening weather conditions. A significant collapse occurred on the Jammu-Pathankot highway bridge, forcing its shutdown, while shooting stones blocked the Jammu-Srinagar highway. Additionally, Zojila Pass received fresh snowfall, closing the Srinagar-Leh highway, while Sinthan Pass and Razdan Pass also remain shut.
Tragically, four people lost their lives in Doda district — two in a house collapse and two swept away by flash floods. The Tawi River continues to flow far above the evacuation level in Jammu city and Udhampur, resulting in the closure of Tawi Bridge. Other rivers, including Basantar in Samba, Ujh in Kathua, and Chenab in Doda, Ramban, and Akhnoor, are all above danger levels, causing flooding in multiple villages such as Janipur, Roop Nagar, Bhagwati Nagar, and Gujar Nagar.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has directed all departments to remain on high alert and prepare for possible evacuations. The Meteorological Department stated that while heavy rain persists, the intensity has slightly decreased since the afternoon, and improvement is expected from Wednesday afternoon.
