Haryana Govt to Offer Jobs to Families of 1984 Anti-Sikh Riot Victims

The Haryana government will provide a government job to one member from each of the 121 families in the state who lost loved ones during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, Chief Minister Nayab Saini announced during the ongoing monsoon session of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha on Monday. He emphasized that the state government is committed to delivering justice and extending support to all affected families.

The 1984 anti-Sikh riots broke out across India following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31 by her Sikh bodyguards in retaliation for Operation Blue Star, a military action to remove militants from the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

Sharing details in the Assembly, the Chief Minister said that during the riots in Haryana, nearly 20 Gurudwaras, 221 houses, 154 shops, 57 factories, three railway coaches, and 85 vehicles were torched. A total of 58 people were injured, while 121 lost their lives in the violence.

Saini appealed to the victim families to mutually agree on one eligible member and submit their name through the Deputy Commissioner of their respective districts to the Haryana Chief Secretary. He added that necessary instructions for the implementation of this scheme will be issued shortly.
