In a tragic incident, at least four people lost their lives after a cloudburst hit Doda district in Jammu on Tuesday, leading to flash floods and widespread damage. Heavy rainfall in the region has caused landslides, mudslides, and the closure of several major roads, leaving the administration on high alert.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh confirmed in a post on X that he had spoken to Doda Deputy Commissioner Harvinder Singh, who reported a flash flood in the Charwa area of Bhalesa. “So far, no casualty linked to this flash flood has been reported. The situation is being monitored by the administration, and regular updates are being conveyed to my office,” Singh stated.
The continuous downpour has swollen most rivers, streams, and seasonal waterways across the Jammu division. Major rivers, including Tawi and Ravi, are flowing above the danger mark. In Jammu city, the Tawi River is nearing the danger level, while in Kathua district, the Ravi River has overflowed its banks in several locations, inundating low-lying villages such as Bagthali, Massos Pur, Keerian Gandial, Barni, Dhanna, Dhanore, and Karyali.
Authorities have advised residents of flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported significant rainfall in the past 24 hours, including Jammu (81.5 mm), Banihal (28.3 mm), Batote (36.9 mm), Katra (68.8 mm), Bhaderwah (99.8 mm), Kathua (155.6 mm), Udhampur (92.4 mm), Ramban (29.5 mm), Kishtwar (34.0 mm), Reasi (67.0 mm), and Samba (99.5 mm).
The IMD has issued an advisory forecasting heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms in the Jammu division and heavy showers in the Kashmir division. People have been strongly advised to avoid riverbanks, streams, nallahs, and landslide-prone areas until conditions improve.
