Government Confirms TikTok Ban Still in Effect Amid Reports of Website Accessibility

The Government of India has officially confirmed that the ban on TikTok remains in effect, dismissing recent claims circulating online about the platform being unblocked. This clarification came on Friday after multiple users reported being able to access TikTok’s website, although they were still unable to log in or watch videos, and the app remained unavailable on both Android and iOS app stores.

“Government of India has not issued any unblocking order for TikTok. Any such statement or news is false and misleading,” government sources stated firmly.

The popular short-video platform, along with 58 other Chinese apps including WeChat and Helo, was banned by India in June 2020 following rising tensions with China after the Galwan Valley clashes. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology had cited national security concerns, stating that the apps were involved in activities that were “prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India, the defense of India, the security of the state and public order.”

Despite the ban, reports of limited website access led to confusion among users. However, officials reiterated that no change has been made to the status of TikTok or other banned Chinese applications.

Meanwhile, India and China appear to be taking cautious steps toward improving bilateral relations. Both countries have resumed border trade through designated points including Lipulekh Pass, Shipki La Pass, and Nathu La Pass. In addition, they are working towards restoring direct flights and updating the Air Services Agreement, along with easing visa processes for various categories of travelers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also scheduled to visit China from August 31 to September 1 to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin. During the visit, he is expected to engage in several bilateral meetings with global leaders attending the summit.
