Veteran Communist Party of India (CPI) leader and former Member of Parliament, Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, passed away on Friday night at the age of 83. He had been undergoing treatment for age-related ailments at a private hospital in Hyderabad.
Born on March 25, 1942, in Kondravpally village of Telangana’s Mahabubnagar district, Reddy’s political journey began in his teenage years when he actively participated in student movements and led an agitation for basic school amenities in Kurnool at the age of 15.
Reddy was elected as a Member of Parliament twice, representing Nalgonda constituency in the 12th Lok Sabha (1998-1999) and the 14th Lok Sabha (2004-2009). Throughout his parliamentary career, he championed workers’ rights, social justice, and the welfare of farmers and marginalized communities. He was also recognized for exposing government corruption and advocating for transparency.
From 2012 to 2019, Reddy served three terms as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India, playing a pivotal role in several mass struggles. Known for his simple lifestyle and unwavering principles, he earned widespread respect across political circles.
Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy is survived by his wife, Dr. B. V. Vijaya Lakshmi, and two sons. Political leaders, including Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and BRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao, expressed deep condolences and paid tribute to his invaluable contributions to Indian politics and society.
