Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti has strongly criticised the state government’s recent takeover of 215 schools run by Jamat Islami and Falah-e-Aam Trust (FAT). Mufti described the move as a direct assault on the region’s educational system and cultural identity, claiming it undermines the balance between modern and Islamic education that these schools provided. She added that the takeover threatens the Kashmiri language, literature, and cultural icons embedded in the curriculum.
Mufti defended FAT-run schools, highlighting their role in educating poor children at minimal fees and supporting thousands of households, and warned that the government’s action jeopardises the future of both students and teachers.
She also accused the National Conference of remaining silent, asserting that the ruling party is executing the BJP’s agenda and allowing the takeover to proceed unchecked despite holding a majority in the assembly and parliamentary representation.
Reflecting on past events, Mufti said that during the 2016 unrest, she resisted pressure to ban JeI, noting that banning them solely for their ideology without evidence would have been unfair.
Responding to statements by Education Minister Sakina Itoo, Mufti urged her to cancel the order if she believed it was wrong and stand for the people she represents.
The government stated that the takeover was based on adverse intelligence reports regarding the management of FAT schools, which are affiliated with the banned JeI/FAT, and the Education Minister later clarified that the move was temporary to ensure academic continuity.
While PDP and other opposition leaders continue to criticise the decision, the Jammu and Kashmir BJP welcomed the step, asserting it would prevent radicalisation of students.
