India Temporarily Halts Postal Services to US Amid Ongoing Tariff Dispute

In response to the ongoing trade tensions triggered by fresh tariffs from the United States under former President Donald Trump’s administration, India has temporarily suspended all outbound postal services to the US. The decision is being seen as a strategic move in light of the increased tariffs imposed on a range of Indian goods.

According to officials from the Ministry of External Affairs and India Post, the suspension is temporary and will remain in place until further notice. The move comes amid growing unease in New Delhi over what it calls “disproportionate and punitive” tariff measures targeting Indian exports.

Shipping and logistics firms have also confirmed the halt, noting that packages bound for the United States are being returned or held until operations resume. Essential and diplomatic deliveries are being rerouted through alternative means, though commercial postal services remain paused.

While the Indian government has not officially framed the action as retaliatory, diplomatic sources suggest that it reflects frustration with Washington’s trade stance. India had previously raised objections to what it viewed as unfair treatment under the Trump-era tariffs, particularly concerning technology goods, textiles, and pharmaceuticals.

Trade analysts believe this development could further complicate the economic engagement between the two countries, particularly ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to China for the SCO Summit and amid broader global discussions on trade realignment.

The United States remains one of India’s largest trading partners, and both governments have previously expressed the desire to deepen cooperation. However, the return of Trump-era policies has reignited old frictions.
