In a dramatic development in the probe into the assault on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed the accused attacker, Rajesh Khimji Sakriya, has ties to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). BJP MLA Harish Khurana posted a photo showing the alleged assailant alongside AAP MLA Gopal Italia, hinting at a possible political conspiracy.
“‘Kejriwal ji, what is this relationship called?’” Khurana quipped, suggesting the photo is evidence of collaboration. His statements were aimed at countering AAP MLA Anil Jha’s earlier claim that the attack was staged—dismissed by the BJP leader as political sleight of hand. Khurana criticized Jha’s assertion, asking whether denying the incident while condemning it was the party line.
The incident, which happened at CM Gupta’s residence during her “Jan Sunwai” session, drew widespread condemnation from all political parties, including top AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Atishi. BJP leaders, however, pointed toward political motives behind the attack, with Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa suggesting that opponents are intolerant of the chief minister’s performance. The Delhi Police have filed an “attempt to murder” case against the accused, a resident of Rajkot.
