PM Modi Meets Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday to review bilateral ties and discuss key issues, including border stability and upcoming multilateral engagements. During the meeting, Wang conveyed a personal message and an invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping for the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin.

Acknowledging the invitation, Modi thanked President Xi and confirmed his participation in the summit. He expressed support for China’s Presidency of the SCO, emphasizing that “stable, predictable, and constructive” India-China relations are essential for regional and global peace and prosperity. Modi also stressed the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity along the border and reiterated India’s commitment to a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary dispute.

The Prime Minister welcomed the steady progress in bilateral relations since his meeting with President Xi in Kazan last year, citing mutual respect, interests, and sensitivities as guiding principles. He also described the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra as a positive development.

Wang Yi shared his positive assessment of discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and the 24th Meeting of Special Representatives, which he co-chaired with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval. In their talks, Jaishankar reiterated that the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) since 2020 continues to impact overall ties. He emphasized that the state of the border will “necessarily be reflected” in the state of India-China relations and underscored the need to adhere to existing agreements to maintain stability.

This high-level engagement signals renewed efforts by both countries to strengthen diplomatic communication and explore areas of cooperation while addressing long-standing security concerns.
