Bill to Regulate Online Gaming Gets Cabinet Approval, Set to be Tabled in Lok Sabha

The Union Cabinet has approved a bill aimed at regulating online gaming, which is expected to be introduced in the Lok Sabha tomorrow, according to sources. The legislation seeks to establish a legal framework for online gaming platforms while imposing strict penalties on gambling conducted through digital applications.

The bill addresses key issues such as gaming addiction, fraud, and discrepancies in existing state-level regulations. It also proposes the designation of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) as the central regulatory authority for online gaming. Additionally, the law intends to curb online betting entirely.

Under the newly introduced Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita, unauthorized betting already carries a fine along with a maximum prison term of seven years.
