The strike by Air Canada flight attendants has officially ended after the union reached a tentative agreement with the airline. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which represents around 10,000 flight attendants, announced the development on Tuesday following several days of disruptions. The strike, which began after midnight on Saturday, caused widespread cancellations affecting nearly half a million passengers.
The union had previously defied an order from a regulatory tribunal to return to work on Sunday, leading Air Canada to halt its plans for a partial service resumption. However, after renewed negotiations on Monday, both parties reached a mediated agreement that will now be presented to union members for approval.
Air Canada confirmed the deal in a statement, noting that operations will gradually resume. The first flights are expected to depart Tuesday evening, but full service restoration may take seven to ten days. “Restarting a major carrier like Air Canada is a complex process. Full restoration may require a week or more, so we ask for our customers’ patience and understanding,” said Air Canada President Michael Rousseau.
