Veteran Actor Achyut Potdar, Beloved ‘3 Idiots’ Professor, Passes Away at 91

Veteran actor Achyut Potdar, widely known for his memorable role as the professor in the cult classic 3 Idiots, passed away on August 18, 2025, at the age of 91. He breathed his last at Jupiter Hospital in Thane after facing health complications.

Before making his mark in the film industry, Potdar served in the Indian Armed Forces and later worked with Indian Oil. His foray into acting began in the 1980s, leading to an illustrious career spanning over four decades.

Over the years, Potdar appeared in more than 125 films across Hindi and Marathi cinema, including iconic titles like Tezaab, Parinda, Rangeela, Vaastav, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, and Ventilator. His portrayal of the strict yet endearing professor in 3 Idiots remains a cultural milestone, with his famous line “kya baat hai” still resonating on social media.

Apart from films, Potdar showcased his versatility on television with notable roles in Wagle Ki Duniya, Mrs Tendulkar, and Bharat Ki Khoj.

Tributes from fans and industry peers have flooded social media, remembering him as a humble, talented artist who left an indelible legacy. His funeral is scheduled for August 19 in Thane.
