Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Meet S Jaishankar in Delhi Today Amid Border, Trade Talks

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will arrive in New Delhi on Monday for a two-day visit aimed at improving bilateral relations and addressing key issues between India and China. His trip comes at a crucial time as tensions in India-US relations have escalated following US President Donald Trump’s decision to double tariffs on Indian goods and impose an additional penalty for purchasing Russian oil.

Wang Yi’s visit is expected to focus on building confidence and ensuring peace along the disputed India-China border, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit later this month.

The Chinese Minister is scheduled to reach Delhi at 4:15 pm on Monday. He will hold bilateral talks with External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar at 6:00 pm, where discussions on border stability, trade relations, and resumption of direct flight services are expected.

On Tuesday morning, Wang will hold a Special Representatives (SR) dialogue on the boundary question with National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval at 11:00 am. Later, he will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi at 5:30 pm at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg. These meetings are significant as they take place just days before PM Modi’s planned China trip for the SCO summit in Tianjin.

The visit is part of ongoing efforts to normalize ties strained since the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in 2020. Although both nations have disengaged from friction points, around 50,000 to 60,000 troops remain deployed on each side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.

Other key topics likely to be discussed include the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, restoring direct flight services—suspended since the COVID-19 pandemic—and expanding trade cooperation. This dialogue follows previous talks between NSA Doval and Wang Yi in China last December, after leaders of both nations agreed in Kazan to revive various dialogue mechanisms.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and EAM Jaishankar have recently visited China for SCO meetings, indicating renewed diplomatic engagement.
