PMO Set to Move from South Block to Modern Executive Enclave Under Central Vista Revamp

After nearly 80 years, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) will soon vacate its iconic location in the South Block and shift to the newly constructed Executive Enclave, a part of the Central Vista redevelopment initiative. According to official sources, the transition is expected to take place next month and is being viewed as a significant milestone in India’s administrative modernization.

The new Executive Enclave, situated just a few hundred meters from the current South Block, has been designed to house the PMO along with other top-tier government departments, including the Cabinet Secretariat and the National Security Council Secretariat. A modern, state-of-the-art conference facility is also part of the new complex. Notably, the relocation will bring the PMO closer to the Prime Minister’s residence.

Government officials cited the inadequacy of space and outdated infrastructure in the colonial-era South Block as key reasons for the move. Built during British rule, the old office spaces no longer meet the demands of a fast-evolving administrative setup in a global power like India. The Prime Minister recently inaugurated Kartavya Path-3, where the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Personnel are now based. At the event, he remarked on the constraints of the historical buildings, including poor lighting, ventilation, and cramped conditions, questioning how such critical ministries functioned there for almost a century.

There is also speculation that the new PMO may be renamed, in line with other institutions under the Central Vista project that have received updated names. Reports suggest the new title may reflect a theme of public service, resonating with the Prime Minister’s statement that the PMO should belong to the people, not to him personally.

Meanwhile, the South Block and North Block buildings, which have served as the administrative heart of India for over eight decades, will be transformed into a cultural landmark. They are set to become the Yuge Yugeen Bharat Museum, developed in collaboration with the National Museum and France Museums Development. The museum aims to showcase India’s rich civilizational heritage and will be a tribute to its past, present, and future.
