NDA to Finalize Vice Presidential Candidate Today as BJP Parliamentary Board Meets

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) parliamentary board will convene on Sunday to finalize the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) candidate for the upcoming Vice Presidential election, scheduled for September 9. The polls were necessitated after the resignation of 74-year-old Jagdeep Dhankhar, who stepped down citing health concerns.

According to party sources quoted, the meeting is scheduled for August 17, 2025, at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi and will be attended by all parliamentary board members. Key attendees include Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP national president JP Nadda, and other senior leaders.

Earlier this month, the NDA held a crucial meeting where it was unanimously decided that PM Modi and JP Nadda will select the alliance’s Vice Presidential nominee. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed this after the meeting.

Among the names reportedly under consideration are Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, Karnataka Governor Thawarchand Gehlot, Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat, and Sikkim Governor Om Mathur. Other probables include Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Delhi L-G VK Saxena, RSS ideologue Seshadri Chari, and Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh.

In terms of numbers, the NDA holds a clear majority. Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members participate in the election, with an effective strength of 781 votes, requiring 391 for a win. With 422 MPs across both Houses, the NDA candidate is virtually assured of victory.
