Zelenskyy to Meet Trump in Washington After Alaska Summit Fails to Yield Ukraine Peace Deal

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Saturday, August 16, that he will meet US President Donald Trump in Washington next week, following Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, which ended without a peace agreement on Ukraine.

Zelenskyy said he had a “long and substantive” discussion with Trump after the Alaska summit and thanked the US leader for inviting him to Washington on Monday. The talks will focus on “ending the killing and the war,” Zelenskyy confirmed, while stressing the importance of European involvement in any security arrangements.

“It is essential that Europeans participate at every stage to ensure strong security guarantees alongside the United States,” Zelenskyy stated. He also highlighted positive signals from Washington regarding its role in guaranteeing Ukraine’s security.

The Ukrainian leader revealed that his conversation with Trump lasted about 90 minutes, including a one-on-one discussion and a joint call involving European leaders.

Despite the high-profile Alaska meeting, Trump and Putin made little progress. Trump later told Fox News, “There’s no deal until there’s a deal,” while Putin claimed the two had reached an “understanding” and warned Europe against undermining the process.

Before leaving Alaska, Trump suggested that the next steps might depend largely on Zelenskyy, though European nations would also play a role. After returning to Washington, Trump spoke with several NATO and EU leaders, including the German chancellor, French president, British prime minister, Italian premier, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin dismissed speculation about a potential trilateral summit between Trump, Putin, and Zelenskyy, stating the topic “has not been raised.”

As diplomatic discussions continue, Russia launched fresh attacks on Ukraine overnight, using one ballistic missile and 85 Shahed drones, 61 of which were intercepted, according to Ukraine’s Air Force. The strikes targeted frontline areas in Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, and Chernihiv.
