Mumbai, August 16: A tragic incident marred Dahi Handi celebrations in Mumbai on Saturday when a 32-year-old participant lost his life while preparing for the event in Mankhurd. The deceased, identified as Jagmohan Shivkiran Chaudhari from Bal Govinda Pathak in Maharashtra Nagar, was reportedly tying the Dahi Handi rope from the first floor of a G+1 structure when he slipped and got trapped inside the grill of the house. He was immediately rushed to Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Apart from this fatal accident, the city recorded multiple injuries during the celebrations as Govinda participants attempted human pyramids and other activities. By 3 pm, hospitals reported a total of 30 injuries. Among them, Cooper Hospital treated 18 individuals—12 are still undergoing treatment, while six have been discharged. At Sion Hospital, six people were admitted, with three still under care and three discharged after primary treatment. Another six cases were reported at Nair Hospital, with one person under observation and the remaining five discharged.
Civic authorities confirmed that besides the unfortunate Mankhurd incident, no other major mishaps were reported during the Dahi Handi festivities across Mumbai.
