India Applauds Trump-Putin Alaska Summit, Emphasizes Dialogue for Peace in Ukraine

India has welcomed the recent summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held in Alaska, hailing their efforts toward peace as “highly commendable.” In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted, “India welcomes the Summit meeting in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia. Their leadership in the pursuit of peace is highly commendable.” It further emphasized that the only viable path forward is through dialogue and diplomacy, adding that the global community is looking forward to a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.

Following the meeting on Friday, President Trump described the talks with Putin as “very productive,” though he admitted that a final agreement was still pending. “We made some headway. There’s no deal until there’s a deal,” he said during a joint press conference. Trump stressed that the summit’s main goal was to reduce the staggering human toll from the Ukraine war, citing weekly casualties in the thousands.

President Putin echoed a positive tone, calling the talks “constructive” and expressing appreciation to Trump for hosting the summit in Alaska. He highlighted the symbolic importance of the location, referencing the close geographical proximity of Russia and the US at the Bering Strait and Alaska’s historic role as a bridge during World War II. Putin also pointed out that diplomatic ties between Moscow and Washington were currently at their lowest since the Cold War, stating that a shift from confrontation to dialogue was long overdue. He concluded with an invitation to Trump to visit Moscow for further discussions, to which Trump responded, “That’s an interesting one… I can see it possibly happening.”

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans to meet President Trump in Washington on Monday. Zelenskyy stated he had a “long, meaningful conversation” with Trump shortly after the latter’s Alaska summit with Putin. According to the White House, Trump also consulted with NATO leaders on Saturday morning, reinforcing diplomatic momentum following the high-profile meeting.
