Australian Cricket Legend Bob Simpson Passes Away at 89

Bob Simpson, one of Australian cricket’s most iconic figures as a player, captain, and coach, has passed away at the age of 89, Cricket Australia confirmed on Saturday.

Simpson enjoyed a distinguished international career, representing Australia in 62 Test matches and two ODIs between 1957 and 1978. He scored 4,869 Test runs, including 10 centuries and 27 half-centuries, and took 71 wickets. Renowned as one of the finest slip fielders of his era, Simpson claimed 110 catches in Test cricket. He captained Australia in 39 Tests, cementing his reputation as a leader.

Making his first-class debut for New South Wales at just 16, Simpson delivered one of the greatest innings in Australian cricket history — a monumental 311 against England at Old Trafford in 1964. This achievement made him one of only seven Australians to score a Test triple century.

After his playing days, Simpson returned to Australian cricket as head coach from 1986 to 1996. Under his guidance, Australia won the 1987 World Cup, secured four Ashes series victories, and in 1995 reclaimed the Frank Worrell Trophy from the West Indies after a 17-year gap. His tenure is widely credited with laying the foundation for Australia’s dominance in world cricket during the 1990s and early 2000s.

To honour Simpson’s contribution, the Australian team will observe a moment of silence and wear black armbands before Saturday’s ODI against South Africa in Cairns.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese led tributes, calling Simpson “an era-defining coach” whose contribution to cricket “spanned generations.” Cricket Australia Chairman Mike Baird praised him as “a brilliant opening batter, incredible slips fielder, and handy spin bowler.” He also highlighted Simpson’s decision to come out of retirement in 1977 during the World Series Cricket era as “a wonderful service to the game.”

In recognition of his outstanding career, Simpson was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2013.
