Supreme Court Orders ECI to Release List of Deleted Voters in Bihar SIR Row

In a significant development related to the Bihar State Electoral Roll (SIR) controversy, the Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to publish the list of voters who were removed from the electoral rolls, along with the reasons for their deletion. The court’s directive came in response to concerns raised over alleged large-scale and arbitrary voter deletions ahead of key elections in the state.

A bench led by the Chief Justice emphasized the need for transparency in the electoral process and noted that the right to vote is fundamental in a democratic setup. The court added that disclosing the names and reasons behind voter deletions would help restore public trust and ensure accountability.

The apex court’s move follows petitions that claimed voters were being removed without proper notice or justification. These deletions were reportedly carried out under the Special Summary Revision (SSR) process, which has been controversial due to a lack of clarity and oversight.

The Election Commission has now been asked to act swiftly and ensure the data is made available publicly, allowing citizens to verify their names and seek recourse if necessary.

The matter will be heard again in due course to monitor compliance and further assess the impact on electoral integrity in Bihar.
