A devastating cloudburst struck Chosoti village in the Paddar sub-division of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district on Thursday, sparking fears of multiple casualties. While unofficial reports suggest that at least 10 people may have lost their lives, authorities have not yet confirmed any fatalities. The sudden natural disaster has caused widespread panic and damage in the remote mountainous area, which falls under a communication shadow zone, complicating relief efforts.
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh confirmed that rescue teams have been deployed to the site to assess the situation, provide medical aid, and conduct search and rescue operations. He added that his office is closely monitoring developments and coordinating efforts to provide all necessary support.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed his condolences to the affected families via a post on social media, stating he was “anguished” by the incident. He said instructions have been given to Civil Administration, Police, Army, NDRF, and SDRF to intensify relief and rescue efforts, ensuring that those impacted receive immediate help.
BJP leader and Opposition member Sunil Sharma, along with the Deputy Commissioner and the SSP of Kishtwar, has reached the site to oversee the rescue operation. Sharma stated that the disaster occurred near a key resting point of the Shri Machail Yatra, where many devotees park their vehicles and where several temporary shops operate.
The Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Kishtwar announced that the Shri Machail Yatra pilgrimage has been suspended until further notice due to safety concerns. He urged people not to panic, emphasizing that all available resources—including SDRF, Red Cross, and local administration—are actively engaged in the response effort.
Local officials have reported damage to infrastructure, but further confirmation is awaited. According to SSP Kishtwar Naresh Singh, teams have already been dispatched to the site, though access remains difficult due to adverse weather and poor connectivity in the region. Further updates are expected as rescue efforts continue.
