Supreme Court cancels bail of wrestler Sushil Kumar in murder case

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court revoked the bail of Olympian wrestler Sushil Kumar, who is a key suspect in the murder case of junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar, instructing him to surrender within a week.

A Bench comprising Justices Sanjay Karol and Prashant Kumar Mishra approved the special leave petition (SLP) submitted by Dhankar’s father, which contested a Delhi High Court ruling that had granted bail to Sushil Kumar.

Sushil Kumar, along with several others, is accused of allegedly attacking former junior national wrestling champion Dhankar, a resident of Rohtak in Haryana, and his two friends, Sonu and Amit Kumar, in the parking lot of Chhatrasal stadium in the city on May 4, 2021, over a purported property dispute.

He has been in judicial custody since June 2, 2021, until the Delhi High Court granted him bail in March of this year.

Sushil Kumar was apprehended after evading capture for 18 days following Dhankar’s death.

As per officials from the Delhi Police, Kumar traveled through Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Haryana during the 18-day pursuit.

He was ultimately arrested in the Mundka area of Delhi, where he had gone to retrieve some cash and had borrowed a scooty from a national-level athlete. After his arrest, he was also suspended from his position with the railway.

In October 2022, a trial court in Delhi had laid out charges against Sushil Kumar and 17 others, paving the way for their trial. Additional Sessions Judge Shivaji Anand had established charges against Sushil Kumar and the other defendants under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those pertaining to murder, rioting, and criminal conspiracy.

According to a charge sheet submitted by the Delhi Police, Sushil Kumar is identified as the mastermind behind the entire murder conspiracy.

Sushil Kumar earned a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
