The forthcoming Independence Day special of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) has sparked controversy due to the inclusion of Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, who are prominent figures of Operation Sindoor, alongside Commander Prerna Deosthalee. These officers, who conducted media briefings during the significant operation, are scheduled to appear in the episode airing on August 15, which has drawn criticism from various groups regarding the perceived exploitation of the armed forces for “public relations” and “political gain.”
Commander Prerna Deosthalee, who made history last year as the first female officer to command a warship in the Indian Navy, will also feature in this special episode.
Officers Led Operation Sindoor Briefings
A recently released teaser from the producers showcases the three officers being greeted on stage by KBC host Amitabh Bachchan. The promotional clip highlights Colonel Qureshi articulating the reasoning behind India’s offensive following the Pahalgam attack.
“Pakistan has been executing such (terror) acts repeatedly. A response was essential, which is why Operation Sindoor was initiated,” she states in the video.
Nevertheless, the appearance of active-duty officers in uniform discussing an ongoing military operation on a reality television show has not been well received by numerous social media users.
Social Media Backlash
Critics have raised concerns about the appropriateness of this action, claiming that the military is being drawn into political branding efforts.
“Have you ever witnessed anything like this after a military operation in any serious nation? How is this permissible for someone in active service? The current government is shamelessly utilizing our forces for its trivial politics and hyper-nationalism,” one user commented.
Another user directly questioned whether such appearances are even allowed by protocol: “The Indian Armed Forces uphold certain protocols, dignity, and immense respect. Politicians are tarnishing it for their personal gain. That is disgraceful.”
A third user expressed disappointment, stating, “Our Army was revered, above politics, beyond public relations. Our forces exist to protect the nation, not to serve a politician’s image.”
What the Protocol States
As per Army dress regulations, the official uniform is not permitted to be worn at cultural events or social gatherings, nor in public venues, restaurants, or while traveling as a civilian — unless explicit written permission is obtained from the commanding officer. Additionally, it forbids the wearing of the uniform during unofficial, unrecognized activities.
This discussion mirrors a recent controversy surrounding Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, who faced accusations of improperly using his honorary Lieutenant Colonel title by featuring in advertisements for the Kerala government. Mohanlal has refuted these claims.
