Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is expected to travel to India

New Delhi: Sources indicated on Wednesday that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is expected to visit India this month.

As per the sources, the Chinese Foreign Minister is anticipated to participate in SR (Special Representative)-level discussions. National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval will act as India’s special representative.

In recent months, India and China have been striving to enhance their relationship, highlighted by several notable developments.

High-level discussions between the two nations have recommenced, including meetings involving Foreign Minister Wang Yi and India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping are anticipated to meet at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China, later this month.

China has officially invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, scheduled to take place in Tianjin at the end of this month.

During a press briefing in Beijing on Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun announced this, expressing hope that the meeting would enhance regional cooperation.

“China welcomes Prime Minister Modi to China for the SCO Tianjin Summit. We believe that with the collaborative efforts of all parties, the Tianjin summit will be a gathering of solidarity, friendship, and productive outcomes, and the SCO will enter a new phase of high-quality development characterized by increased solidarity, coordination, dynamism, and productivity,” stated the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson.

The SCO Summit will be hosted by China in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1 this year, with leaders from over 20 countries, including all SCO member states, and heads of 10 international organizations expected to participate in related events, according to the Chinese Ministry spokesperson.

The Ministry of External Affairs has yet to release a statement regarding the Prime Minister’s visit.

Additionally, India and China have come to an agreement to disengage and resume patrolling in the Depsang Plains and Demchok regions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). This initiative is intended to alleviate tensions and restore peace along the border.

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, an important pilgrimage route for Hindus, has been reinstated, representing a revival of people-to-people connections and cultural diplomacy between the two countries.

India and China have reintroduced tourist visas after a five-year hiatus, and there has been a resurgence in business relations, with Indian diesel cargo being transported to China for the first time in over three years.

Both nations are participating in multilateral forums such as BRICS, SCO, and G20, demonstrating their commitment to collaborate on global platforms despite existing bilateral tensions.

This development occurs in the context of tariffs imposed on India by United States President Donald Trump for purchasing Russian oil.

Prime Minister Modi last visited China in 2018 on two separate occasions. The first was in April for the India-China Informal Summit in Wuhan, followed by a visit in June for the 18th meeting of the Council of Heads of State of SCO in Qingdao.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi last met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in October 2024 during the 16th BRICS Summit held in Kazan, Russia.

During their discussion, both leaders expressed their approval of the agreement concerning patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh. They concurred that the Special Representatives would convene soon to manage peace and tranquility in border areas and to seek a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution to the boundary issue.
