The 86-year-old self-proclaimed godman, Asaram, who has been found guilty of rape and is currently serving a life sentence in Gujarat and Rajasthan, has once again been granted relief as the Rajasthan High Court, which is reviewing his appeal submitted on August 8, has extended his interim bail until August 29. This decision was made following the presentation of medical reports to the court.
Advocate Nishant Borda, representing Asaram, submitted recent medical reports that indicated a decline in his health. Previously, on similar grounds, the Gujarat High Court had also prolonged his interim bail until August 29.
According to the ruling from the Gujarat High Court, Asaram’s troponin level – a crucial marker for heart damage – is significantly elevated, raising serious concerns. The attending physician has described his condition as critical.
Currently, he is receiving treatment in the ICU at Jupiter Hospital in Indore. During the proceedings, Rajasthan High Court Justices Dinesh Mehta and Vineet Kumar Mathur ordered the formation of a panel of doctors at a government hospital in Ahmedabad.
This panel will consist of two cardiologists who will perform a thorough evaluation of Asaram’s health, particularly focusing on his heart condition. The court directed that the panel carefully assess all health issues mentioned by Asaram, with particular emphasis on the heightened troponin levels, as this could present significant risks to his heart. The team of doctors is required to provide a detailed report of their findings to the court for further review.
It is important to note that the Gujarat High Court on Thursday had also extended Asaram’s bail in a rape case until August 21 on medical grounds.
The Bench acknowledged that Asaram suffers from various age-related health issues and has experienced two heart attacks. “We are inclined to grant bail to the petitioner on medical grounds. The petitioner shall not attempt to tamper with evidence and shall not meet with his followers,” the order specified.
Asaram is currently serving a life sentence at Jodhpur Central Jail.
In his appeal to the Supreme Court, Asaram has requested bail, citing his declining health and the necessity for advanced medical care. Additionally, Asaram has requested the suspension of the life sentence handed down to him by a trial court in connection with a rape case in Gujarat.
