Monsoon fury: 362 roads closed in Himachal due to landslides, flash floods

Heavy rainfall has impacted Himachal Pradesh over the past few days, resulting in multiple cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides, which have caused the closure of 362 roads for vehicle traffic, officials reported on Saturday, 10 August.

Among these, 220 roads were obstructed in Mandi district, while 91 roads were blocked in the neighboring Kullu district on Saturday, as per the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC).

The meteorological office in Shimla has issued a yellow warning for heavy rain, along with thunderstorms and lightning in isolated areas of the state on Sunday, and an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in two to four districts from Monday through Wednesday.

On Saturday, light to moderate rain affected several regions of the state, with Naini Devi recording 112.4 mm of rainfall, followed by Pandoh with 102 mm, Raipur Maidan at 74.6 mm, Pachhad at 67 mm, Narkanda at 66.5 mm, Kufri at 65.7 mm, Kasauli at 65.5 mm, Nahan at 49.3 mm, and Solan at 45.6 mm, according to the meteorological office.

Sundernagar, Murari Devi, Kangra, Bhuntar, Shimla, Jubbarhatti, and Jot experienced thunderstorms, while Seobagh and Dhaulakuan faced strong winds with speeds ranging from 46 to 50 km/h, the report indicated.

This monsoon season, 112 individuals have lost their lives due to rain-related incidents in the state, with 37 people reported missing. Furthermore, 704 transformers and 178 water supply schemes have been impacted, according to the SEOC.

Since the monsoon began on 20 June, Himachal Pradesh has suffered losses amounting to Rs 1,988 crore.

The state has experienced 58 flash floods, 30 cloudbursts, and 53 significant landslides.

From 1 June to 9 August, the state received 503 mm of rain, surpassing the normal rainfall of 445.7 mm by 13 percent, as reported by the meteorological office.
