India has expressed its approval of the US and Russia’s decision to convene a meeting on August 15, affirming its support for the summit.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated: “We appreciate the agreement reached between the United States and the Russian Federation for a meeting in Alaska on August 15, 2025.”
This meeting is expected to pave the way for resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and creating opportunities for peace.
As Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized on multiple occasions, “This is not an era of war,” according to the MEA statement. “India, therefore, supports the forthcoming summit meeting and is prepared to assist in these efforts,” it continued.
India’s relationship with Russia regarding crude oil purchases and arms sourcing has led to accusations from the US and its European allies that New Delhi is financing the conflict in Ukraine. US President Donald Trump has enacted trade sanctions against India due to its connections with Russia.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin had a phone conversation, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership between their nations.
Prime Minister Modi shared this update on the social media platform X, stating, “We reviewed the progress in our bilateral agenda and reaffirmed our commitment to further deepen the India-Russia special and privileged strategic partnership.” Putin also updated Modi on the latest developments related to Ukraine.
On August 6, the Russian President met with US President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy Steven Witkoff in Moscow, which he mentioned to Modi. Modi reiterated “India’s consistent position for a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.”
