Earthquake Of Magnitude 6.1 Jolts Russia’s Kuril Islands Days After Massive Tremor

Russia experienced another earthquake on Saturday, following a 6.1 magnitude tremor that struck the Kuril Islands region, just days after a significant 8.8 magnitude earthquake impacted the country.

The tremor was recorded at 19:33:54 IST at a depth of 10 km, with its epicenter situated at latitude 49.94 N and longitude 162.70 E, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

On July 31, a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, generating large tsunami waves along the coastlines of both Russia and Japan. This earthquake was noted as the strongest in the area since 1952.

Scientists from the Volcanology and Seismology Institute of Russia’s Academy of Science indicated that this was the first occurrence of such a mass awakening in 300 years, as reported by the Associated Press.

The 8.8 magnitude earthquake is said to have triggered the awakening of seven volcanoes, including Klyuchevskoi, Krasheninnikov, Avachinsky, among others, in Kamchatka.
