The Election Commission of India has formally announced the election for the Vice President’s office, which is set for September 9, 2025.
This declaration initiates the nomination process, with the deadline for submitting nominations being August 21. The scrutiny of nominations will occur on August 22, and candidates have until August 25 to withdraw their nominations.
The position of Vice President became vacant on July 21 following Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation due to health issues. His term was initially scheduled to conclude in August 2027. According to constitutional regulations, a Vice President elected mid-term is entitled to serve a complete five-year term.
Candidates must meet certain eligibility requirements, including Indian citizenship, a minimum age of 35 years, and qualifications necessary for election to the Rajya Sabha. Those holding any office of profit under the central or state governments are disqualified from running.
The Vice President is elected by the members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, which includes nominated members of the Upper House. With five vacancies in the Rajya Sabha and one in the Lok Sabha, the effective strength of the electoral college is 786. A candidate needs to obtain at least 394 votes to be elected.
The ruling NDA coalition has a considerable advantage, with the support of 422 members from both Houses. The voting process will utilize the proportional representation system through a single transferable vote, conducted via a secret ballot.
This election is particularly important as it will fill the second-highest constitutional position in India, thereby ensuring continuity in governance and the functioning of parliamentary activities.
