Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan honors MS Swaminathan at centenary conference in Delhi

New Delhi: On Thursday, Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan honored Professor MS Swaminathan on the occasion of his birth centenary, referring to him as a selfless visionary who devoted his life to the nation and its farmers.

During the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference at ICAR Pusa, Chouhan recited a poetic couplet to illustrate the eminent scientist’s lifelong commitment: “Professor MS Swaminathan dedicated his life to farmers, agriculture, and humanity.”

“While everyone lives for their own interests, those who dedicate their lives to others, to the country, and to humanity, truly make a difference. MS Swaminathan was one such noble individual,” Chouhan remarked.

He reminisced about how Swaminathan was profoundly impacted by the Bengal famine of 1942-43, which inspired him to commit his life to combating hunger and enhancing India’s agricultural landscape.

Chouhan stated, “In a period when millions faced starvation, he was deeply touched by their plight and chose a path of public service.”

Emphasizing a significant achievement in Swaminathan’s legacy, Chouhan noted the 1966 import of 18,000 tonnes of Mexican wheat, which Swaminathan utilized to develop a high-yield variety in collaboration with Punjab farmers. “This initiative resulted in a remarkable increase in wheat production from 5 million tonnes to 17 million tonnes within just one year,” he explained.

He also acknowledged Swaminathan’s role in establishing the Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), which continue to equip farmers with scientific knowledge and sustainable practices.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a commemorative coin and a centenary memorial stamp honoring the esteemed Indian geneticist Professor MS Swaminathan on his birth centenary.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference today.

The conference’s theme, “Evergreen Revolution, the Pathway to Biohappiness,” embodies Swaminathan’s lifelong commitment to ensuring food security for all.

The conference will serve as a platform for scientists, policymakers, development professionals, and various stakeholders to engage in discussions aimed at promoting the principles of the ‘Evergreen Revolution’. The main topics will cover sustainable management of biodiversity and natural resources; sustainable agriculture to ensure food and nutrition security; enhancing climate resilience through adaptation to climate change; employing suitable technologies for sustainable and equitable livelihoods; and involving youth, women, and marginalized communities in developmental discussions.

In tribute to his legacy, the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) along with the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) will introduce the MS Swaminathan Award for Food and Peace. The Prime Minister will present the inaugural award to the recipient during this event.

This global award aims to honor individuals from developing nations who have significantly contributed to enhancing food security and promoting climate justice, equity, and peace for vulnerable and marginalized communities through scientific research, policy formulation, grassroots involvement, or local capacity enhancement.
