A 50-year-old man lost his life and at least two others were injured when a municipal garbage collection van collided with two two-wheelers in the Jamalpur area of Ahmedabad early Thursday morning. The incident occurred during the Amdavad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) regular door-to-door waste collection operations.
According to police and eyewitness reports, the accident happened near the Pagthia area of Jamalpur around 6 am, when the van veered off course and struck two two-wheelers. The collision caused one of the riders, identified as Mohammadbhai (50), to fall and sustain severe head injuries, resulting in his death at the scene.
Local residents informed the police that two to three other individuals suffered minor injuries. “After the crash, the van driver tried to escape but was apprehended by local residents and handed over to the police,” stated an official from the E-Division traffic police.
The body of the deceased has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and his family has been notified, according to police reports.
Traffic Police Inspector V K Desai, who is overseeing the investigation, mentioned, “We have taken the driver, identified as Rahul Parmar, into custody. Preliminary information indicates that two others sustained minor injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital. Their statements will be taken after they receive medical care.”
An ambulance was dispatched immediately following the accident, and the injured were taken to the hospital. Police confirmed that the van involved in the incident is owned by the municipal corporation and is part of its regular waste collection fleet.
An FIR will be filed under the appropriate sections of the BNS and Motor Vehicles Act, officials stated, adding that the van will also be subjected to a mechanical inspection to determine if a technical malfunction caused the loss of control.
