Thane: Following an operation at a well-known eye hospital in Navi Mumbai, five patients developed serious eye infections, leading police to file a case against two ophthalmologists who performed the surgeries without valid licenses, officials reported on Wednesday.
The surgeries took place between December 2024 and March 2025 at the private eye hospital situated in Vashi, within Maharashtra’s Navi Mumbai township, they noted.
“The accused doctors are said to have executed the eye surgeries in a careless, hurried, and negligent manner. Consequently, five patients, including a couple over the age of 65, experienced significant eye injuries. The victims were found to have severe infections caused by the pseudomonas virus following the procedures,” stated an official from the Vashi police station.
The doctors reportedly conducted the surgeries without having renewed their licenses from the Maharashtra Medical Council during that time, he added.
On Monday, a First Information Report (FIR) was filed based on an investigative report from the civil surgeon, who thoroughly examined the victims’ complaints. The civil surgeon’s findings supported the claims made by the victims to the police, the official mentioned.
The Vashi police have charged the two doctors under sections 125(a), 125(b) (acts endangering life or personal safety of others), and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as well as relevant provisions of the National Medical Commission Act, he stated.
So far, no arrests have been made, and a comprehensive investigation is ongoing, the official concluded.
