Protests erupted in Tamil Nadu in response to the recently released Telugu film ‘Kingdom’, directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri and featuring Vijay Deverakonda in the lead role.
The film, which premiered globally on July 31, has ignited controversy for allegedly depicting Sri Lankan Tamils negatively and naming the antagonist after the Tamil deity Murugan.
Starring Vijay Deverakonda alongside Bhagyashree, Satyadev, and other actors, the film has faced backlash from Tamil nationalist groups, particularly Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), who accuse the filmmakers of offending Tamil sentiments.
NTK members claim that ‘Kingdom’ portrays Sri Lankan Tamils as villains and have expressed strong disapproval of the antagonist being named after Lord Murugan, a highly respected deity among Tamils.
The party argues that this portrayal is not only disrespectful but also seeks to tarnish the identity and history of the Tamil community.
In reaction, NTK activists organized protests outside various theaters throughout Tamil Nadu, calling for a ban on the film’s screening in the state.
In Ramanathapuram, tensions heightened when NTK members tried to obstruct the film’s showing at a local theater.
Protesters encircled the venue, chanting slogans and demanding an immediate cessation of the screening. The situation escalated when police intervened to disperse the crowd.
A confrontation reportedly occurred between the police and NTK members, leading to a brief standoff.
Additional law enforcement was dispatched to the area to restore order. Although the police succeeded in calming the situation, the atmosphere in Ramanathapuram remains charged, with a significant security presence around the theaters showing the film.
No injuries have been reported thus far, but authorities are on high alert to avert any further escalation.
In the meantime, Naam Tamilar Katchi has once again called on the Tamil Nadu government to prohibit the film, alleging that it promotes anti-Tamil narratives and disrespects cultural sentiments.
Political analysts think that the controversy is expected to escalate unless the filmmakers or the censor board provide clarifications that address these concerns.
