Monsoon devastation in Himachal: 192 fatalities, roads and electricity supply affected

Widespread disruptions caused by the monsoon persist in Himachal Pradesh, with the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) reporting that as of 10 a.m. Tuesday, 449 roads, 753 distribution transformers (DTRs), and 276 water supply schemes are still affected throughout the state.

The SDMA has confirmed that the total number of fatalities has risen to 192 since the beginning of the monsoon season, which includes 106 deaths related to rain and 86 fatalities from road accidents, underscoring the combined risks posed by severe weather and infrastructure weaknesses.

Mandi district is the most severely impacted, with 318 roads blocked due to heavy rainfall and landslides, including three major national highways — NH-21, NH-003, and NH-154. The subdivisions of Seraj, Thalout, and Karsog in Mandi have experienced the highest levels of disruption. Additionally, the district has reported 657 instances of power outages, indicating significant damage to the electrical infrastructure.

Other districts that have been heavily affected include Kullu, with 67 blocked roads; Kangra, with 23; and Sirmour, with 22. In Kullu, NH-305 has been obstructed near Jhed (Khanag) due to landslides. In Una district, the Pandoga bridge on the Panjawar-Bathdi road has sustained structural damage from flooding and is closed until further notice.

Despite ongoing efforts, many areas remain unreachable. Officials have stated that restoration work is being conducted urgently. In Kullu, temporary measures have been taken to restore irrigation and sewerage systems to ensure essential services, as noted by the SDMA.

The authority continues to issue warnings and has advised citizens to refrain from unnecessary travel, particularly in high-risk areas.
