Senior Army Officer Accused of Violent Assault on SpiceJet Staff Over Excess Baggage at Srinagar Airport

A senior Army officer has been accused of a “murderous assault” on SpiceJet Airlines staff following a dispute over excess cabin baggage at Srinagar Airport on July 26, 2025. The incident reportedly left four airline employees with severe injuries, including a spinal fracture and jaw trauma.

According to a statement by SpiceJet, the altercation began when the officer was informed that his cabin baggage, weighing 16 kg, exceeded the permissible 7 kg limit. When asked to pay the applicable charges, the officer allegedly refused and forcibly entered the aerobridge without completing the boarding process, violating aviation security protocols. CISF officials escorted him back to the boarding gate, where the situation turned violent.

The airline claims the officer brutally assaulted the ground staff using punches, repeated kicks, and even a queue stand. One employee collapsed unconscious but continued to be kicked by the accused. Another staff member, attempting to help the fainted colleague, suffered severe bleeding from the nose and mouth after a forceful kick to the jaw. All four injured employees were rushed to the hospital and are undergoing treatment for what SpiceJet described as “grievous injuries.”

SpiceJet confirmed filing a First Information Report (FIR) with the local police and has initiated the process to place the officer on India’s no-fly list. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has been informed, and CCTV footage has been handed over to authorities for further investigation.

In its statement, the airline said, “SpiceJet strongly condemns any act of violence against its employees and will pursue this matter to its fullest legal and regulatory conclusion.”
