Parliament Prepares for 16-Hour Discussion on Operation Sindoor Amidst Opposition Criticism

The Lok Sabha is preparing for an extensive 16-hour debate on Operation Sindoor, which is India’s military response to the Pahalgam terror attack, scheduled during the Monsoon Session on Monday, July 28. The Rajya Sabha will engage in a similar discussion for the same length of time on Tuesday.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has confirmed that the Business Advisory Committee has prioritized the debate on Operation Sindoor, responding to requests from the Opposition, including the Congress, which had called for its immediate addition to the Parliament agenda prior to the session’s commencement.

Key Highlights of the Debate:

The Lok Sabha discussion will be spearheaded by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, with contributions anticipated from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and BJP leaders Anurag Thakur and Nishikant Dubey.

The Opposition is expected to question US President Donald Trump’s assertions regarding mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, a topic that has been a point of ongoing debate.

Members of the Opposition INDIA bloc, such as Rahul Gandhi, Gaurav Gogoi, Manish Tewari (Congress), Akhilesh Yadav (SP), Supriya Sule (NCP), and Abhishek Banerjee (TMC), will speak in the House.

The TDP will also be involved, with MPs Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu and GM Harish Balayogi given 30 minutes of speaking time.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who returned from a two-nation visit last week, is anticipated to make a statement, although official confirmation is still pending.

Before the session commences, Opposition floor leaders will meet at 10 AM to finalize their strategy for the second week of the Monsoon Session.

Rijiju has urged Opposition parties “not to obstruct the House,” referencing the frequent adjournments that occurred in the first week. “It’s detrimental to the country if Parliament does not operate,” he remarked. Leaders from the NDA who participated in multi-party delegations regarding Operation Sindoor are also expected to engage in the debate.
