A gangrape incident involving a minor took place in Odisha’s Malkangiri district on Sunday evening. The girl was returning home after attending a birthday party for a friend.
During her journey back, three individuals abducted her and transported her to a forested area located 10-15 kilometers from Malkangiri town, where they subjected her to torture and gangrape. According to police reports, the assailants allegedly assaulted her one after the other.
The girl was able to escape from the forest, only to find herself in another perilous situation. On the outskirts of Malkangiri town, a truck driver sexually assaulted the minor girl after she fled from her initial attackers.
Local residents observed the girl with the truck driver under suspicious circumstances, intervened, and rescued her, bringing her ordeal to an end. The Malkangiri Police conducted an investigation and apprehended all four suspects, including the truck driver.
Malkangiri Superintendent of Police (SP) Vinodh Patil confirmed the incident during a press conference on Tuesday, stating, “The first incident of rape occurred in a forest area, approximately 10-15 kilometers from Malkangiri town. Four individuals are implicated in the crime, including the truck driver, but only three participated in the gang rape.”
This incident occurs amidst widespread outrage following the death of a 20-year-old student at Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore, who died after setting herself on fire on July 12, 2025, due to alleged sexual harassment by a teacher.
Her complaint was reportedly dismissed by the college’s internal inquiry committee. She succumbed to her injuries two days later.
In another incident in the state, a 15-year-old hockey trainee in Odisha’s Jajpur district was allegedly kidnapped and raped by her coach and two accomplices in a lodge earlier this month.
The event was reported on Monday when the minor lodged a complaint at the Jajpur Town Police Station. The authorities apprehended three individuals: the hockey coach, who is accused of committing the rape, along with two former coaches who allegedly aided in the crime.
A fourth individual who was detained was released because of insufficient evidence. It has been reported that the accused threatened to kill the girl if she revealed the incident. The survivor underwent a medical examination, and her testimony was documented in court.
