On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to the surprising resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, offering his best wishes and recognizing Dhankhar’s extensive service to the country.
“Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has had numerous opportunities to serve our nation in different roles, including as the Vice President of India. I wish him good health,” the Prime Minister stated in a message on X (formerly Twitter).
This statement followed Dhankhar’s resignation submitted to President Droupadi Murmu a day earlier, where he cited health concerns. In his resignation letter, he mentioned, “To prioritize health care and follow medical advice, I hereby resign as Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.”
Dhankhar’s resignation signifies a sudden conclusion to his five-year term that commenced in August 2022 and was initially scheduled to last until August 2027. In his role as Vice President, he also held the position of Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
His exit on the very first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament has sparked a flurry of speculation within political and media circles, although no additional information regarding his health was disclosed in the resignation letter.
