Dhankhar’s exit: The Business Advisory Committee of the Rajya Sabha has been rescheduled to Wednesday

New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha Business Advisory Committee (BAC) has yet to finalize when to conduct a debate on Operation Sindoor, as its meeting on Monday was inconclusive and faced four postponements. The next meeting is now scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

Originally, the meeting was convened by then Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar at 1pm on Monday, but it did not reach a conclusion and was rescheduled to 4:30pm, then again to Tuesday at 1pm.

However, it seems that the second meeting triggered a series of events leading to Dhankhar’s dramatic resignation late at night, as he stepped down as Vice President and ceased to be the Rajya Sabha Chairman.

The 1pm meeting, which was to be chaired by Deputy Chairman Harivansh on Tuesday, was postponed to 5:30pm.

The day after the Vice President’s resignation, the Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman met with the President.

Later in the afternoon, the meeting was again postponed to Wednesday at 12:30pm.

Interestingly, the 4:30pm meeting, which saw Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju absent due to other official commitments, hinted at the increasing tension between Dhankhar and the government.

Just before the meeting, Dhankhar informed the House about receiving an Opposition-sponsored impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma, which surprised the government. No reasons were given for the rescheduling of the BAC meetings.

Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha floor leader Derek O’Brien stated that the BAC has been rescheduled an “unprecedented” four times since Monday and accused the government of avoiding Parliament.

“They do not want Parliament to function. That is why they are disrupting the entire session… What is happening?” he questioned.
