‘I Was Humiliated…’: Incident in Balasore, a Sharda University student takes their own life, citing harassment

A second-year BDS student at Sharda University in Greater Noida took her own life on Monday, reportedly due to harassment from faculty members.

The event occurred on the university grounds, falling under the jurisdiction of the Knowledge Park Police Station.

Authorities found a suicide note at the scene, in which the victim held her teachers accountable for the harassment.

“If I die, the teachers of PCP and Dental material are responsible. I want them to be imprisoned. They have mentally tormented me. They have humiliated me. I have been under stress because of them for a long time. I want them to experience the same suffering,” the student purportedly wrote in the note, naming two teachers she held responsible for her tragic decision.

In the aftermath of the incident, tensions rose on campus as students organized protests, calling for accountability from the college administration.

A heated confrontation also occurred between police officers and the protesting students.

Following a complaint lodged by the student’s family, police have apprehended two individuals. Officials stated that the investigation is ongoing.

This incident follows closely on the heels of another case in which a college student in Odisha’s Balasore district died after setting herself ablaze, allegedly due to harassment from a teacher.

She suffered severe burn injuries and ultimately passed away during treatment.
