Kolkata: Authorities have arrested at least five individuals in New Town, near Kolkata, in connection with the murder of gangster Chandan Mishra at a Patna hospital, as reported by police on Saturday.
The suspects were taken into custody from a housing complex in the satellite township following coordinated raids by the Bihar Police and their West Bengal counterparts in the early hours of Saturday, according to officials.
Mishra, who resided in Buxar district of Bihar, was shot and killed by gunmen inside a private hospital in Patna on Thursday morning. He was a convicted murderer out on parole.
“All the suspects were hiding in an apartment within the housing complex in New Town. Of the five, four were directly involved in the murder. The involvement of the fifth suspect, whether he participated in the crime or merely assisted the others in evading capture, is currently under investigation. They fled Patna after the incident and made their way to Kolkata,” a police officer stated.
Three individuals have been detained for displaying black flags at PM Modi’s rally in Bihar. “The location of their mobile phone tower was instrumental in tracking them down. The Bihar Police will present them before a local court to request a transit remand,” he added.
A viral CCTV footage of the incident showed five armed men entering the hospital’s ICU and opening fire on Mishra.
Mishra was incarcerated at Beur Jail and had been granted parole for medical treatment at the hospital, police indicated, noting that he was implicated in 24 criminal cases, including more than 12 murder charges.
SP Patna (Central) Diksha informed PTI on Friday that an investigation is ongoing to determine how the assailants were able to access the room where Mishra was being treated without undergoing any security checks.
“This situation raises significant concerns regarding the security measures in place at the hospital. Five unmasked armed attackers reached the second floor, opened fire on Mishra, and subsequently escaped the scene. Investigators are certainly examining any potential complicity that may have contributed to this security breach,” she remarked.
