US Embassy’s Warning after Incident of Indian Woman Shoplifting in Illinois

The US embassy in India has released a new advisory indicating that a person’s visa may be revoked if they are associated with any incidents of ‘assault, theft, or burglary’ in the United States. This announcement follows an incident where an Indian woman was apprehended for shoplifting at Target, a video of which has since gone viral on social media.

In a message posted on X, the embassy warned individuals to refrain from participating in assault, theft, or burglary while in the United States.

“Engaging in assault, theft, or burglary in the United States will not only result in legal complications but could also lead to the revocation of your visa and disqualify you from obtaining future US visas,” the advisory states.

“The United States prioritizes law and order and expects all foreign visitors to adhere to US laws,” the embassy further emphasized.

An Indian woman reportedly attempted to shoplift items valued at over ₹1 Lakh from a Target store.
In a startling event, an Indian woman allegedly tried to steal goods worth over $1,300 ( ₹1.11 lakh) from a Target store in Illinois, USA, igniting a significant online discussion.

The bodycam footage, which gained widespread attention, captures the moment the woman, who is said to be a visitor from India, was confronted and subsequently detained by US police for the alleged theft. She can be heard pleading with the officers to allow her to pay for the items she supposedly took.

“But if I’m paying for it, what is the harm?” she is heard asking an officer, who responded, “It would have been acceptable if you hadn’t left, right? You would have had the chance to pay. However, since you exited the store at that moment, you opted not to pay for it, and we cannot reverse that.”

An Indian woman named Ananya Avlani, who was visiting the US, shoplifted goods worth $1,300 (Rs1,11,617) from a Target store located in Illinois.

US visa restrictions concerning social media activities
The most recent warning follows a series of limitations placed on US visa applications.

In a new directive, the US State Department has mandated that applicants for F, M, or J non-immigrant visas must change their social media privacy settings to ‘public’.

Last month, the US Embassy in India declared that all applicants for F, M, or J non-immigrant visas are obligated to set their social media accounts to ‘public’.

On July 12, the US Embassy in India warned that visas could be revoked and individuals deported if they do not adhere to US laws and immigration regulations.
