India Aligning Its Trade Strategy With US-Indonesia Model, Says Donald Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that India is pursuing its trade strategies along the same lines as the recently enhanced U.S.-Indonesia trade agreement. Speaking at a business leaders’ forum in Washington, Trump highlighted India’s growing role in shaping global trade dynamics and suggested that New Delhi is taking cues from Washington’s approach with Southeast Asian nations.

“India is working along the same line as our trade deal with Indonesia – focusing on fairness, balanced access, and mutual growth,” Trump said during the forum, attended by diplomats, trade officials, and industry leaders.

Drawing Parallels With US-Indonesia Pact

The U.S.-Indonesia trade agreement, revamped during Trump’s administration and expanded under the current leadership, emphasized reducing tariffs, streamlining supply chains, and increasing bilateral investments — particularly in digital trade, agriculture, and energy sectors.

According to Trump, India is adopting a similar model, ensuring that trade deals serve domestic interests while also opening doors to sustainable partnerships with global allies. He pointed to India’s recent policy shifts toward digital infrastructure, semiconductor manufacturing, and defense technology collaborations as signs of such alignment.

India’s Trade Moves

India has recently ramped up trade negotiations with countries including the UK, EU, and Australia, while also enhancing ties with ASEAN nations. Experts believe India’s focus mirrors elements of the US-Indonesian model — especially in building resilient supply chains, promoting domestic production through schemes like PLI (Production Linked Incentives), and pushing for equitable trade terms.

While Trump did not confirm if he was referring to any specific trade agreement currently being negotiated, he praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts in “standing up for India’s economic sovereignty.”

Strategic Implications

Policy analysts view Trump’s statement as an indication of India’s rising stature in global trade. The comment may also signal potential future alignment if Trump secures another term. Trade experts believe that aligning with proven frameworks like the US-Indonesia deal could help India accelerate bilateral and multilateral negotiations in a volatile global economy.
