An Indian student has jailed to 35 months in prison in Singapore over death of a construction worker

A 22-year-old Indian student was sentenced to 35 months in prison on Wednesday for the death of a fellow Indian national, which occurred when he pushed him into a river while under the influence of alcohol.

Legha Pawan admitted to voluntarily inflicting serious injury on Jasbir Singh, a 33-year-old construction worker, during the night of June 30 last year.

The initial charge of causing death through reckless behavior was downgraded, and another charge was considered, as reported by Channel News Asia.

Singh, who was married and the father of two young children in India, was the primary provider for his family.

The court was informed that both Legha and Singh were intoxicated on the night of June 30 when the incident occurred. After Singh was pushed into the river at Clarke Quay, a well-known riverside leisure area, a couple nearby raised the alarm.

Rescue divers found his body a few hours later.

Legha fled the scene in an attempt to evade capture, but he was arrested the following morning, according to the report.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Jheong Siew Yin stated that Legha was aware of the victim’s intoxication and that it was “reasonably foreseeable” that the push would result in serious injury.

She also noted that he left the scene without assisting the victim. The defense attorney emphasized that no weapon was involved, and the push was described as “a generic push” not aimed at vulnerable areas, as per the Channel report.

For voluntarily causing injury that led to serious harm, Legha faced a potential sentence of up to five years in prison, a fine of up to SGD 10,000, or both, the report indicated.
