‘Clear-cut case’: Investigation into the murder of Gurugram tennis player Radhika Yadav

On Sunday, the Gurugram police announced that they were not looking to gather statements from friends or individuals who shared tributes and accusations on social media regarding the murder of tennis player Radhika Yadav. They described the case as an ‘open and shut’ matter, indicating that a charge sheet would be filed based on robust forensic and testimonial evidence.

In a related development, Himaanshika Singh Rajput, a friend of Yadav, stated in an Instagram post on Sunday that the murder was premeditated and influenced by societal pressures. ‘She had been unwell for the last 10 days. Her father had orchestrated the murder three days prior to its occurrence,’ Himaanshika mentioned in her video.

She further claimed that Yadav succumbed to her father’s demands and accused the father’s acquaintances of inciting him with remarks about her attire, makeup, and increasing online fame.

Radhika Yadav, aged 25, had a private Instagram account with only 69 followers, indicating that she did not fit the typical profile of a social media influencer. The police stated that there is no direct link between her social media activity and the motive for the crime. ‘The accused has admitted to the crime. These video statements are not part of the investigation and will not be included in the charge sheet,’ said Sandeep Kumar, the public relations officer for Gurugram Police.

‘During our interrogation, we specifically asked Deepak Yadav to identify those who incited him against his daughter, but he was unable to name anyone. We have interviewed over 20 individuals from Wazirabad village, including those close to the family, and none acknowledged having such discussions,’ he added.

Although the motive for the murder remains somewhat ambiguous, the police asserted that the evidence gathered—including the recovery of the murder weapon, forensic findings, and Deepak Yadav’s confession—was adequate to proceed with the charge sheet.

Tennis player Radhika Yadav’s father orchestrated her murder: Shocking revelation from Gurugram police

Yadav, a state-level tennis player and the founder of a tennis academy located in Sector 56, was fatally shot at her home in Sushant Lok Phase-3 on the morning of July 11. Investigators have indicated that the crime was premeditated, noting that Deepak allegedly instructed his son to go out for milk—a chore he typically handled himself—before reportedly firing four shots into his daughter’s back while she was in the kitchen making breakfast for her mother on her birthday.

WhatsApp messages retrieved from Radhika’s phone indicate that she frequently expressed feelings of entrapment and a desire to leave her home. “I want to enjoy life, there are too many restrictions here,” she texted her coach in one message. In another, she shared her aspirations to travel to Dubai or Australia for studies and to live independently.

Radhika’s mother, Manju Yadav, who was at home during the tragic event, has not been implicated in the case.
