An 8-year-old female cheetah from Namibia at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh passed away on Saturday, according to officials. They reported that she had sustained injuries a week prior during a hunting attempt within her Soft Release Boma.
She succumbed to her injuries today, resulting in the total cheetah population at the park decreasing to 26.
The cheetah that died was named Nabha, who had a fracture on the left side of her body, in addition to other injuries. Despite receiving treatment for a week, she ultimately could not recover from her injuries.
“Nabha, the 8-year-old Namibian female cheetah, passed away today. She sustained severe injuries about a week ago, likely during a hunting attempt inside her Soft Release Boma. She had fractures in both the Ulna and Fibula on her left side, along with other injuries. She was under medical care for a week but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries. More details will be available once the post-mortem report is received,” officials stated.
Following her death, there are now 26 cheetahs remaining in Kuno National Park, which includes 6 females, 3 males, and 17 cubs that were born in India.
“All are healthy and thriving. Additionally, the two male cheetahs in Gandhisagar are also doing well,” officials added.
Officials noted that out of the 26 cheetahs, 16 are currently in the wild and are performing exceptionally well.
“They have adapted successfully to the habitat of Kuno National Park, learned to coexist with co-predators, and are regularly hunting. Recently, the anti-ecto-parasitic treatment for all cheetahs has been completed. The two mothers, Veera and Nirva, along with their recently born cubs, are healthy and doing well,” officials reported.
