Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday exchanged a warm handshake and a heartfelt hug with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva upon arriving at the 17th BRICS Summit, hosted at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro.
Taking to social media platform X, PM Modi expressed his gratitude to President Lula, stating, “Grateful to President Lula for hosting this year’s BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro. BRICS remains a powerful force for economic cooperation and global good.”
Indian Community Gives Enthusiastic Welcome
Upon his arrival in Brazil, PM Modi received an enthusiastic and vibrant welcome from the Indian diaspora in Rio de Janeiro. The community greeted him with traditional performances, including a musical recital of prayer songs and a cultural dance themed around ‘Operation Sindoor’.
Operation Sindoor, which has come to symbolize India’s response to new-age asymmetric warfare, was notably referenced in this performance. The theme reflects India’s evolving defense strategies in light of recent attacks, such as the April 2025 terrorist strike on tourists in Pahalgam, which underscored the increasing threat to civilians alongside military personnel.
PM Modi Lauds Indian Diaspora’s Cultural Bond
PM Modi, moved by the warm reception, took to X again, writing that he was amazed by the Indian diaspora’s enduring connection to Indian culture, praising their efforts to keep traditions alive far from home.
The 17th BRICS Summit is expected to witness key discussions on economic cooperation, geopolitical challenges, and joint strategies for inclusive development among member nations — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
