On Friday, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding his trip to Trinidad and Tobago, labeling him as a “super premium frequent flier PM.”
In a post on social media platform X, Ramesh stated, “The Super Premium Frequent Flier PM will be in Trinidad & Tobago today.”
The Congress leader emphasized the historical and cultural importance of the Caribbean nation, pointing out the strong ties between India and Trinidad and Tobago.
He acknowledged that many descendants of Indian indentured laborers have played vital roles in shaping the political and cultural scene of Trinidad and Tobago, citing former Prime Ministers Basdeo Pandey and Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Nobel Prize winner VS Naipaul along with his brother Shiva Naipaul, and the iconic West Indies cricketer Sonny Ramadhin.
Approximately 45 percent of Trinidad and Tobago’s population is of Indian descent.
Ramesh’s social media message noted, “Trinidad and Tobago is a small twin-island republic that has produced several world figures. We in India recognize it as one of the destinations where the British transported thousands of indentured laborers during the 19th century.”
