Essential chemotherapy medications utilized globally have not passed quality assessments, putting cancer patients in over 100 nations at risk of ineffective therapies and potentially life-threatening side effects, as revealed by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ, www.tbij.com).
These medications are fundamental to treatment regimens for various prevalent cancers, such as breast, ovarian, and leukemia. Certain drugs had such minimal amounts of their active ingredients that pharmacists indicated administering them to patients would be equivalent to providing no treatment at all. Conversely, other medications contained excessive active ingredients, endangering patients with severe organ damage or even death. “Both situations are dreadful,” remarked one pharmacist. “It’s devastating.”
Healthcare professionals from several countries informed TBIJ that the drugs in question were not performing as anticipated, leaving patients unexpectedly unresponsive to their treatments. Additionally, some patients experienced side effects so severe that they could no longer endure the medication.
